Edward Condon was a nuclear physicist who led the Condon Committee, tasked with determining the scientific value of studies into unidentified flying objects.

Biography[]

In the 1940s, Condon was involved in the Manhattan Project and was a person of interest and witness before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He was noted as a hostile witness, causing Congressman Richard Nixon to despise Condon.[1]

The Condon Committee was formed at the University of Colorado and funded by the United States Air Force. After two years of research, the group delivered its findings to the Air Force in 1968 and published them in January 1969. The report reached the conclusion that there was no scientific value in the government continuing to find research into UFOs. This was met with criticism from Professor J. Allen Hynek, Project Blue Book officer Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Milford, and Richard Nixon, who was then President. Nixon surmised that Condon rushed the report into publication before Nixon took office.[1]
