Marty Lindstrom was the father of Norma Jennings and Annie Blackburn and co-founder of the Double R Diner.[2]

Biography[]

Lindstrom worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for twenty-five years[1] and founded the Railroad Diner in 1938 with his wife Ilsa Lindstrom in Twin Peaks, Washington. Following World War II, he attempted to rename it Marty's Railroad Café, then finally the Double R Diner. The couple had a daughter, Norma,[2] born in 1950.[3]

A supposedly bankrupt Lindstrom purchased the roadside motel the Weary Traveler, east of Yakima, in the late 1960s. By the 1970s, he took regular trips by himself primarily to the Yakima area, apparently to maintain business interests, but had entered into an affair with his motel's manager, Vivian Smith, with whom he had a daughter, Annie. He fully abandoned his life in Twin Peaks in 1978, living in a common-law union with Vivian, as Ilsa would not grant him a divorce.[1]

Lindstrom's final years were tarnished by failing physical and mental health, coupled with verbal abuse from Vivian and guilt over the damage his actions caused his family. Shortly after Ilsa's death in 1984, Vivian convinced Lindstrom to legally marry. Norma came to the Weary Traveler to reconnect with her father, discovering his failing health and her half-sister. Marty Lindstrom died in 1985, leaving Vivian with the Weary Traveler.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

The "Marty" name is a play on the "Mar T" name of the actual diner location used when the original TV series was shot there.
