Roland Blackburn was the owner of a Yakima beer distribution company. He was the second husband of Vivian Smythe and adoptive father of Annie Blackburn.
It was speculated that Blackburn and Vivian began their relationship while her previous husband, Marty Lindstrom, was still alive. The pair married less than six weeks after Lindstrom's death in 1985. Shortly after they wed, Blackburn adopted Annie and they sent her to a Catholic boarding school in Kennewick.[1]
During her senior year, Annie returned home for Christmas. After a party, Vivian caught Roland – an abusive alcoholic – drunkenly attempting to sexually assault Annie. Blackburn fled the house, got into his Cadillac DeVille, and drove it off a bridge into the Yakima River, dying instantly.[1]
