Washington, D.C. was the capital of the United States.

History[]

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark of the Corps of Discovery were celebrated upon their return to the capital in 1807 after their historic expedition.[1]

Two years later, Lewis was serving as governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory, residing in St. Louis. He intended to return to the capital to demand financial reimbursement owed to him by the State Department and to inform former President Thomas Jefferson and then-President James Madison of James Wilkinson's espionage against the United States. However, while en route to Washington, D.C., Lewis died on October 11 at Grinder's Stand in Tennessee under mysterious circumstances.[1]

On January 14, 1879, Chief Joseph delivered his speech "A Plea for Peace and Equality" in Washington, D.C.[1]

On July 15, 1968, Dale Cooper and his father visited the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. upon invitation from J. Edgar Hoover.[2]

The Pentagon was located in the capital. On April Larken and Star planned to chain themselves to its doors during the summer of 1969.[2]
