White Sands was a nuclear testing site in New Mexico.
History[]
1940s[]
In 1945 Dougie Milford served as buck private in a special detachment division in Alamogordo, near White Sands. Though unconfirmed, it is speculated by the archivist that the unit's task was to perform various hazardous tasks around the Manhattan project, potentially exposing themselves to radiation.[1]
On July 16th, 1945, the world's first atomic bomb was detonated in White Sands. Following this event, woodsmen gathered around and into the convenience store, shuffling to and fro. In a dark void, a figure spewed an unknown substance filled with what appeared to be eggs, and a black orb with the face of BOB.[2]
In a fortress over a purple sea, the Fireman watched the preceding events in a screening room, including the Trinity explosion.[2]
After World War II, Project Paperclip brought former Nazi scientists, including Wernher Von Braun, to the front lines of the US rocket and space program, which was based at White Sands Missile Range. Their presence, along with historical models of Nazi saucer-like flying objects, led Tammy Preston to speculate that the US government might have been trying to make "flying-wing" aircrafts of its own in White Sands.[1]
On June 29th, 1947, three Naval Research Laboratory workers reported a UFO sighting near White Sands.[1]
In an interview with Dougie Milford in 1949, Jack Parsons called White Sands "a fertile ground for the Working [...] of Babylon", which he defined as "calling forth the Elemental".[1]
1950s[]
On August 5th, 1956, a strange creature hatched from a speckled egg and crawled through the desert.[2]
2010s[]
Gordon Cole kept a framed picture of the atomic explosion in his office in the Philadelphia FBI field headquarters.[3]
Behind the Scenes[]
The scenes taking place in White Sands during Part 8 were realized entirely in CGI by BUF Compagnie.[4]
Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost stated that the woodsmen's arrival was a direct outcome of the Trinity nuclear test in White Sands.[5]
